Ajax beat Tottenham 1-0 away to continue Champions League fairytale

They might not have been given any chance at the beginning of the Champions League this season but Ajax are only 90 minutes away from a first Champions League final since 1996.

The giant-killing side, which already accounted for the exit of not just Real Madrid but also Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus side, offered another confident performance away to Tottenham away tl take control of the tie.

Although they had to survive on their wits at times playing against a usually fluid and energetic Tottenham side, the young team did enough to go into the second leg in Amsterdam with an away goal advantage.

With Frenkie de Jong allowed to pick his head up and find passes, Hakim Ziyech was making life difficult for Spurs and before long, Donny van de Beek found an opener

And although they broke the strides the young Ajax side and imposed a dominance of their own driven by the introduction of World Cup winner, Mousa Sissoko, Spurs couldn’t get much apart from knocking the side from Holland back in the second half.

But with Son Heung-min and – possibly – Harry Kane set for a return for the second at the Amsterdam Arena next week, Ajax have a lot to do to keep the Spurs team at bay.

But for now, their Champions League fairytale continues and they count London, along with Madrid and Turin productive hunting grounds.
