Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has announced the withdrawal of all defamation cases earlier filed by him against several individuals, revealing that the decision followed a deep personal reflection during a New Year church service.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Akpabio made the disclosure on Thursday while speaking at the Sacred Heart Parish in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, shortly after attending a New Year Mass where a sermon struck him profoundly and influenced his next course of action.

The Senate President disclosed that he had instituted close to nine separate defamation suits against individuals he accused of spreading falsehoods and damaging his reputation.

However, according to him, the message delivered by the priest during the homily compelled him to reconsider his stance and embrace forgiveness as the new year begins.
“I had almost nine matters before the court involving people who lied against me and attempted to tarnish my name,” Akpabio told the congregation. “But as I listened to the sermon, it felt personal. I realised I needed to let go, so I have instructed my lawyer to discontinue all the cases.”
Throughout 2025, Akpabio was involved in several high-profile legal battles linked to alleged defamatory statements, including a widely reported suit against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

One of the most prominent cases was a N200 billion claim filed late in the year over allegations of sexual harassment, which the Senate President firmly denied and demanded proof in court. His wife had also initiated separate legal actions over claims she said were injurious to the family’s image.
Tensions between both lawmakers escalated after Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio played a role in her suspension from the Senate in March 2025.
With this latest move, Akpabio has effectively brought an end to all defamation-related litigations involving him, signalling a fresh start and a conciliatory tone for the new year.
