Akpabio Will Be Senate President; We’ve Resolved It – Ganduje
-
The APC won the majority of seats in the Nigerian senate in the recently concluded elections.
-
The victory set up an intense battle within the party for the senate presidency.
-
However, a governor familiar with the race says it is over.
Eko Hot Blog reports that the outgoing Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has said a former Minister of Niger Delta affairs, Godswill Akpabio, will be the next president of the Senate.
There had been reports that Senate President Ahmed Lawan was leading the efforts to doom Akpabio’s bid.

Lawan reportedly told President-elect Bola Tinubu not to back the former governor of Akwa Ibom State because he wouldn’t get enough support in the senate.
However, speaking on Thursday at a meeting with his Cross River counterpart, Ben Ayade, in Calabar, the state capital, Ganduje said the decision to nominate Akpabio was already a done deal.
“The senate president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will come from the south-south and it is no other person than the former governor of Akwa Ibom,” he said.
“The uncommon governor, the uncommon minister who is going to be the uncommon president of the senate. So we have resolved that.
“I am giving you assurance, we are waiting for the D-Day that he will be the senate president of Nigeria.”
However, the Kano governor did not explain if it was a decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership.
The APC leadership is reportedly working to get consensus candidates for all principal positions in the tenth national assembly.
Akpabio is not the only incoming senator in the race for senate president. Others are Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC-Abia North); Senator-elect Abdul-Aziz Yari (APC-Zamfara West); Senator-elect Dave Umahi (APC-Ebonyi South), and Senator-elect Adams Oshiomhole (APC-Edo North).
