ALERT: No More Transport Fare Palliative As Lagos Govt Cancels 50% Discount
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government is ending its palliative measure which cut public transport fares by 50%.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) announced the development in a statement on Saturday.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had announced a 50% fare rebate in the state’s regulated transport system on August 2, 2023.
He announced the discount as a way to relieve the economic pressure that the fuel subsidy removal imposed on Lagos residents.
However, the state’s transport authority has said the rebate will end on Sunday, November 5, 2023, three months after it came into effect.
Therefore, transport fare on government-owned vehicles will return to the old rate from Monday, November 6, 2023.
“The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday, a statement by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has said,” the statement reads.
“The 50% fare rebate was announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on 2nd August 2023.
“The public is hereby informed that from Monday, 6th November 2023, transport fare will return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rate.”
LAMATA, however, added that a new off-peak fare will be introduced to give those travelling outside the early morning peak a form of rebate on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and Blue Line train.
