BREAKING: ALGON Condemns Suspension Of 18 Edo LG Chairmen, Demands Reversal
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has condemned the suspension of 18 local government chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly, describing the action as unconstitutional and an abuse of power.
In an emergency meeting on Wednesday, the National Executive Council of ALGON jointly criticized the suspension, which followed Governor Monday Okpebholo’s accusations that the chairmen refused to submit their financial records to the state government.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that ALGON stated that the chairmen were not afforded an opportunity to defend themselves, making the decision a violation of due process and local government autonomy as upheld by the Supreme Court.
“The suspension is a setback for democracy and a blatant abuse of power,” ALGON declared in a statement, noting widespread criticism of the move as unconstitutional and void.
The association urged the Edo State House of Assembly and Governor Okpebholo to reverse their decision, emphasizing that respecting the rule of law is critical to strengthening democratic governance.
ALGON further called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in what it termed an abuse of power, stressing the importance of upholding the constitutional autonomy of local governments across Nigeria.
The suspension has drawn widespread condemnation from stakeholders nationwide, with many emphasizing the need for local government independence to foster effective governance at the grassroots.
