Alimosho General Hospital Celebrates World Thrombosis Day
The Alimosho General Hospital (ALGH), Igando on Thursday joined others across the globe to commemorate the Y2022 World Thrombosis Day as part of efforts to focus the attention of the populace on an often overlooked and misunderstood condition.
Eko Hot Blog reports that speaking at an event organised for patients and health workers by the facility to mark the day with the theme: “Eyes open to Thrombosis”, Dr. Adebukola Orolu, a Consultant Haematologist and Head of the Haematology Department at ALGH, said the significance of the annual event is to focus attention on Thrombosis as a condition which affects some people.

She described the condition as the formation of a blood clot in the blood vessel, adding that there are two types of Thrombosis, namely Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE).
Dr. Orolu reiterated that thrombosis usually results in the death of one out of four people afflicted with the condition worldwide, noting, however, that the condition can be prevented if healthcare workers are able to identify patients at risk by conducting Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) risk assessment and administration of clot prevention drug when necessary.
While maintaining the need for a consistent global awareness about the condition, she listed Immobility, Sedentary lifestyle, Cancer and Use of some medications among others as likely causes of thrombosis formation.
