EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has disbanded the Secretariat of the Advertising Standard Panel (ASP) for approving billboards with the slogan ‘All Eyes on the Judiciary’.
The ASP is a statutory panel within ARCON that is tasked with ensuring that advertisements adhere to the prevailing laws of the federation and the code of ethics for advertising professionals.
The billboards were reportedly destroyed by the Federal Government after it was deemed that they were attempting to manipulate the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal.
Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has slammed President Bola Tinubu over the destruction of the billboards. He described the act as a clear evidence of Tinubu’s authoritarianism and assault on the freedom of speech.
Atiku said that the billboards were simply calling for justice and that it was curious that Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) found the message upsetting. He added that even if the billboards were pulled down, it would not stop all eyes from being on the judiciary at this historic time.
Atiku also said that Tinubu’s actions were a clear case of abuse of office and reinforced the argument that court cases ought to be concluded before the inauguration so that beneficiaries of fraudulent elections would not be able to manipulate the system in their favour.
