EKO HOT BLOG reports that the White House has officially stated that no American citizens were among the victims in the ambush of a United States (U. S) Embassy convoy that took place on Tuesday.
The attack, which occurred in southeast Nigeria, resulted in the tragic deaths of two local workers from the embassy and two Nigerian policemen.
The incident unfolded on a major road in the Ogbaru local government area of Anambra State, a region known for its history of separatist violence.
According to Anambra police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga, the convoy was targeted by armed assailants who proceeded to open fire on the vehicles.
Tragically, two Police Mobile Force operatives and two consulate staff members lost their lives in the attack. The bodies of the victims and their vehicles were set ablaze by the perpetrators.
Additionally, the gunmen kidnapped two police operatives and a driver from the convoy. In response to the incident, joint security forces have initiated a rescue and recovery operation in the area, aiming to locate and retrieve the abducted individuals.
John Kirby, a representative of the US National Security Council, addressed the ambush and clarified that no American citizens were involved in the attack.
He assured the public that no US citizens were harmed in the incident, although he acknowledged the existence of casualties and the possibility of fatalities among those affected.
“We are aware of some casualties, perhaps even some killed,” stated Kirby, emphasizing that the absence of American citizens among the victims was confirmed.
As investigations into the ambush continue, authorities are working to apprehend the perpetrators and secure the safe return of the abducted individuals.
The US government, while relieved that no American citizens were harmed, expressed deep concern over the incident on the Embassy Convoy and extended condolences to the families of the victims.
The attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges in certain regions of Nigeria and the need for continued efforts to combat violence and ensure the safety of all individuals within the country.
