Anchor University student Deborah Elufisan has successfully navigated the demanding journey of becoming a chartered accountant while pursuing her university degree. Her story highlights the challenges and triumphs of a young woman determined to achieve her dreams despite a rigorous schedule and unexpected setbacks.

Deborah is an undergraduate at Anchor University, known for her passion for accounting. Although she initially chose to study economics, her love for accounting remained steadfast. Determined to achieve her dream, she decided to pursue professional certification through the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).

The turning point in Deborah’s journey came unexpectedly during her first year at Anchor University. Her father informed her he had enrolled her in ICAN’s Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS) and paid for her classes. Although she had not planned to begin ICAN studies while in school, she embraced the opportunity and started attending weekend classes.

Her ICAN journey took her through various study centers and phases, from her university in Lagos to external classes at IQ Bryte Learning Center. These locations became the backdrop for her tireless efforts to balance academic responsibilities and professional aspirations.

Balancing her university coursework and ICAN preparation was no small feat. Deborah recalls the intense schedule of classes throughout the week and additional ICAN lessons during weekends. By the time she reached the Skills and Professional levels, her schedule intensified further.

“I was the only one going out every weekend, both Saturdays and Sundays, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.,” she explained.

Despite her dedication, Deborah encountered a setback when she received a reference in Advanced Audit and Assurance during her professional exams. At just 17 years old, she had aimed to become Nigeria’s youngest chartered accountant, a record held by Jonathan Adewale. The disappointment was a defining moment, but it only strengthened her resolve. She retook the exam and succeeded.

Deborah’s determination was fueled by her support system, including her parents, siblings, friends, and lecturers.

“I’m grateful to my Dad and Mom for pushing me even when I didn’t want to,” she shared. Their encouragement, combined with her inner drive, helped her overcome obstacles and achieve her goals.

Having successfully navigated her ICAN journey, Deborah’s story serves as an inspiration to other young professionals. She credits her success to hard work, resilience, and the community that supported her. As she continues her academic and professional endeavors, Deborah remains committed to excellence, embodying the spirit of determination and ambition.
