Another Container Fall In Oshodi Shows Lagos Govt’s Struggle To Enforce Its Laws

  • There has been a galore of containers falling in Lagos State in recent times.

  • Last Sunday, a container fell on a passenger bus and killed nine people.

  • Another container fell on Wednesday, continuing a worrying trend of deadly falls.

Eko Hot Blog reports that a MACK containerised truck carrying 40fts container on Wednesday fell beside a TATA bus in the ever-busy Oshodi area of Lagos State.

The passengers on the bus, however, escaped unhurt.

A spokesman for the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, said no casualty was recorded.

“We are lucky that the container fell beside the bus and not on the bus. The passengers on the bus ran out when this happened,” he said.

The LASTMA official noted that most of the trucks don’t pass the minimum standards. He added there is no reason the truckers should load containers without something to hold them permanently.

“From Sunday till now, we’ve recorded seven to eight fallen tankers,” Taofiq said.

Likewise, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, saying the truck, with no registration number, lost control due to mechanical fault (brakes failure) and fell just beside the bus with registration number JJJ 550XX.

In a statement issued by LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, on Wednesday evening, the agency also disclosed that the incident caused no loss of life or injury.

“The Agency’s LRT, alongside LASTMA crew and NPF are responders present at the scene of incident,” the statement reads.

“The accidented truck had been recovered off the road with the Agency’s Super-Metro.

“The 40ft container has also been successfully placed on the truck with the aid of the Agency’s heavy duty equipment (Goliath) and was towed by LASTMA private tow truck.”

The statement added that the road has been reopened for public use.

Reacting to the Sunday accident on Monday, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu directed the Lagos Ministry of Transportation and Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) to meet urgently to find a lasting solution to the menace of falling trucks.

He also directed the enforcement of the laws governing the operations of trucks.

“All the laws governing the operations of trucks and related vehicles must be enforced with more vigour and diligence,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The latest incident shows that, despite the governor’s directive, the government is still struggling to effectively enforce its laws.
