Eko Hot Blog reports that pandemonium rocked the Ajah area of Lagos State on Sunday when a policeman attached to the Ajah Police Station shot dead a female lawyer, Bolanle Raheem.
The officer involved in the Christmas Day shooting reportedly fled the scene.
However, the force eventually caught and detained by the police.
According to Punch, Raheem, her sister, and four children were coming from an eatery in their car around 11am when the cop tried to stop them.
A source told the newspaper that the woman was trying to make a U-turn under the Ajah Bridge when the officer shot at her vehicle.
The bullet was said to have hit the victim; she was rushed to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, adding that the officer was in custody
“The officer involved in the shooting is an ASP; he has been arrested, detained, and will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigations,” he said.
In a tweet early Monday morning, Hundeyin described the shooting as an “unfortunate and avoidable incident.”
He disclosed that two other officers were also taken into custody.
“Unfortunate and avoidable incident that was. The ASP that shot and two others with him have since been taken into custody. They are to be moved to the SCID for further investigation,” he posted on Twitter.
He was responding to a tweet that lamented that the slain lawyer’s family has been robbed of their loved one on Christmas day.
“Good evening @BenHundeyin, one of your officers attached to Ajiwe police Division Ajah, shot at point blank & murdered a lawyer colleague of mine today,” Uzoka, a lawyer, tweeted at the police spokesperson in Lagos Sunday night.
“This is one too many of similar incidents with @PoliceNG officer in Ajiwe. Now a family have lost a dear one on Christmas day.”
Recall that this is the second police shooting in December 2022.
On December 6, a police officer shot and killed Gafaru Buraimoh of Happy Land Estate, Ajah, Lagos.
The police are yet to release the details of their investigations into the murder, but the force had vowed to ensure justice.
