‘Antimicrobial Resistance in Nigeria a ‘Silent but Deadly Threat’ – Dr Tunji Alausa
The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has warned that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a silent but deadly threat that has taken root globally, with Nigeria being no exception.
Alausa made this statement on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Taskforce on Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) in Nigeria, an event that marks a critical step in the country’s fight against this growing public health crisis.
“AMR is an issue that cuts across sectors, affecting not only human health but also animal health, agriculture, and the environment,” Alausa said, emphasizing the far-reaching consequences of this challenge.
He highlighted the severe impacts of AMR, including increased mortality, prolonged illnesses, and a greater economic burden on both families and the nation.
Drawing attention to the alarming statistics, Alausa revealed that in 2019, Nigeria recorded 64,500 deaths directly attributable to AMR, with an additional 263,400 deaths linked to it.
These figures, he pointed out, make AMR-related deaths in Nigeria higher than those caused by enteric infections, respiratory infections, tuberculosis, maternal and neonatal disorders, neglected tropical diseases, malaria, and cardiovascular diseases combined.
“This reality necessitates immediate action,” Alausa stressed, noting the absence of a national AMS program to monitor antimicrobial use and sensitivity across Nigeria. He warned that this gap poses a significant danger, potentially leading to an escalation in AMR cases, which would further strain the already overburdened healthcare system.
The newly inaugurated taskforce, consisting of 13 members, has been entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing national efforts in AMR research, surveillance, and stewardship.
Alausa outlined the taskforce’s comprehensive mandate, which includes coordinating AMR surveillance and research, establishing a digital information platform for AMR data, and promoting public and healthcare provider awareness of AMR.
Dr. Alausa called for unwavering commitment from the taskforce members, expressing confidence in their ability to lead the nation in this crucial fight against antimicrobial resistance.
