Eko Hot Blog reports that a fuel tanker carrying a full load capsized and slanted across the Mobile Road near the Mobile Depot in Apapa on Wednesday, causing a severe traffic standstill and raising fears of a potential explosion in the area.
According to eyewitnesses interviewed by Eko Hot Blog, the overturned tanker has redirected vehicular movement into inner streets as residents steer clear of the major Mobile Road that leads to the boundary area.
Any spark in the vicinity could ignite the spilled fuel, posing a significant risk to lives and property.
“It’s a terrifying situation,” said Deborah, an eyewitness at the scene. “The tanker is lying across the road, and you can see fuel leaking out. We’re all being advised to stay away from the area until it’s safe.”
Tunji, a truck driver who witnessed the incident, described the moment the tanker overturned. “I was right behind the tanker when it suddenly lost control and toppled over,” he said. “The driver was fortunate to escape unharmed, but now we’re faced with a potentially disastrous situation.”
Despite having a fire service barracks located nearby in the Marine Beach area of Apapa, multiple calls to the fire service have proven abortive, leaving residents and commuters in a state of heightened anxiety.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area until further notice while emergency response teams work to contain the situation and prevent any potential ignition.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for stricter regulations and safety measures regarding the transportation of hazardous materials within densely populated areas like Apapa.
Efforts are underway to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow, but commuters should expect significant delays and plan alternative routes until the situation is resolved.
Eko Hot Blog will continue to monitor the developments and provide updates as more information becomes available.
