Eko Hot Blog reports that in a stern warning, prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart, Okoi Obono-Obla, has urged Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara to prioritize reconciliation over political posturing.
Obono-Obla, a former presidential aide, cautioned that “playing to the political gallery may lead to [Fubara’s] political demise.”
Addressing the ongoing crisis in the state, Obono-Obla dismissed the acting party chairman Tony Okocha’s call for APC lawmakers to impeach Fubara.
“It doesn’t lie in the mouth of Tony Okocha to tell the legislators when or not they should impeach Governor Fubara,” he stated.
Furthermore, Obono-Obla criticized the election of a new Speaker by five PDP lawmakers loyal to Fubara, labeling it “unconstitutional and a joke carried too far.”
He cited constitutional provisions, stating, “Constitutionally, only about 10 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly can muster the constitutional quorum to elect a speaker.”
Expressing disappointment with the leadership in Rivers State, Obono-Obla lamented, “The crisis in Rivers State is driven by personal egos, empty pride, ego tripping, lawlessness, infantilism, grand frivolity, and institutionalization of the culture of impunity.”
Obono-Obla’s remarks come as tensions escalate between Fubara and the APC-dominated State Assembly, with both sides seemingly entrenched in their positions.
“It is unfortunate and a sad commentary for the ordinary people of Rivers State to be saddled with leaders who spend all their time fighting instead of focusing squarely on the serious business of governance,” he added.
