Dapo Abiodun, governor of Ogun state, says the constitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is devoid of democratic tenets and principles of fairness.
Ekohotblog reports that Abiodun said this while speaking at the party’s south-west stakeholders meeting for the party’s constitution review.
Addressing the party’s faithful at the event, which took place at the June 12 cultural centre, Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, on Friday, Abiodun calls for re-evaluation of the party’s constitution in order to position it as a genuine democratic entity.
The governor said it was time for the party to subject itself to introspection, personal appraisal and self-examination, adding that the APC constitution needs to be reviewed as this would further entrench and promote democracy in the party.
“It is important that we come together to appraise ourselves as members of this great party, and, even look critically at the structure of our party,” he said.
“This will give us the opportunity to evaluate the journey so far. It is a period of self-examination.
“In doing this, the Constitution of our party is a vital instrument that we must continuously re-evaluate. If we must prove to others that we are true democrats, we must be seen as practising and ensuring internal democracy even within the party.”
Abiodun asked members of the APC in the zone to use the meeting as an opportunity to resolve all disagreements, and chart the way forward for the party’s progress in the zone.
