The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disassociated itself from Team New Nigeria (TNN), a group that recently sparked speculation by flooding Kano with campaign posters for former President Goodluck Jonathan’s potential 2027 presidential bid.
The posters, seen in prominent locations like the Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road, bore slogans such as “Team New Nigeria 2027; The Goodluck Nigeria Needs Dr Goodluck Jonathan.”
This development fueled conversations about the 2027 presidential race, with names like Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and President Bola Tinubu already in the mix.
APC Deputy National Organising Secretary, Nze Chidi Duru, dismissed TNN’s links to the ruling party, stating;
“This group is not part of the APC at any level. Their promotion of Jonathan’s campaign, who is not a card-carrying APC member, confirms they are unaffiliated with us.”
TNN, which recently announced plans to form a new political party, claims to have mobilized over 26 million voters nationwide. The group’s National President, Modibbo Farakwai, said TNN aims to rescue Nigeria from challenges like poverty, hunger, and insecurity.
It has also reportedly developed party structures, including a flag, logo, and manifesto, and is in the process of registering with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
This is not the first time Jonathan’s name has been associated with the APC. In 2023, some supporters controversially purchased an APC nomination form for him, a move he denied any involvement in.
Meanwhile, Arewa Consultative Forum founding member, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, noted that Jonathan has the right to run for president, saying, “He lost his second mandate to Buhari; this is an opportunity to complete his tenure.”
For now, APC maintains that TNN’s activities have no connection to the ruling party, underscoring that they do not recognize the group or its initiatives.
