EKO HOT BLOG reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has set its sights on a resounding victory in the forthcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, with the party’s leaders expressing unwavering determination to secure triumph at the polls.
According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Edo State governorship election is slated for September 21, 2024, followed by the Ondo State election on November 16, 2024.
In the electoral arena, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stands as a formidable contender, fielding Asue Ighodalo for Edo State and former deputy governor Agboola Ajayi for Ondo State.
For the APC, Senator Monday Okpebholo is leading the charge in Edo State, while the incumbent governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, carries the party’s banner in Ondo State.
In an interview with Punch, the APC’s Director of Publicity, Bala Ibrahim, articulated the party’s resolve to reclaim Edo State and maintain its stronghold in Ondo State.
Ibrahim emphasized the APC’s history of wresting power from the PDP and expressed confidence in securing victories through transparent electoral processes.
He stated, “If you recall when the PDP was in power, they boasted about being in power for the next 60 years… Our party, the APC, wrested power from the party… If the APC could wrest power from the PDP at the centre, what is there to wrest at the state or local government levels?”
Ibrahim further asserted, “We always win on a free and fair basis; we don’t rig. Our party has never been indicted for rigging… We are confident of winning in Edo and Ondo in free and fair elections; I have no doubt. We will decisively defeat the PDP in these two states.”
However, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, countered the APC’s claims, alleging the ruling party’s penchant for electoral malpractice. Ologunagba highlighted the peaceful conduct of the PDP’s primary in Ondo State as indicative of the party’s suitability for governance.
He stated, “You know that the APC is notorious for engaging in improper conduct and not adhering to what is right… Therefore, for me, it would be fruitless to engage in arguments with the APC regarding rigging…”
As the political landscape intensifies with competing narratives, the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states loom as crucial battlegrounds, where the APC and the PDP will vie for supremacy amidst the electorate’s scrutiny.
