APC Speaks on President Tinubu’s Role in Obasa’s Impeachment

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has addressed rumours making the rounds about President Bola Tinubu’s involvement in the recent impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

It would be recalled that On Monday, members of the Lagos State House of Assembly impeached Obasa and replaced him with Mojisola Meranda as the new Speaker.

The lawmakers explained that the impeachment was necessary to protect the integrity of the legislature and the state. They stated they had “had enough” of Obasa and unanimously decided it was time for a leadership change.

A lawmaker remarked, “It’s a change of baton. Change is inevitable. We have a duty to ensure the integrity of the House and protect our state’s image. That’s why we made this decision.”

After becoming Speaker, Meranda and her supporters met with members of the Lagos State Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to explain the situation and receive their blessings. Meranda confirmed, “We briefed the GAC on what happened and have received their support.”

Obasa’s impeachment followed several controversies during his tenure:

N17 Billion Scandal: He was accused of approving ₦17 billion for a new gate at the Assembly complex, despite the existing three gates. He denied the allegations but never disclosed the actual cost.

Thanksgiving Fund Misuse: Allegations of ₦200 million spent on a thanksgiving event that reportedly never happened.

Proposed LCDA Conversion: Obasa pushed to convert Lagos’ 37 Local Council Development Areas into administrative areas, a move said to have angered Tinubu, who reportedly advised against it. Despite this, the Assembly passed the bill, awaiting the governor’s assent. This action allegedly contributed to Obasa’s removal.

APC Reacts

Seye Oladejo, the APC’s Publicity Secretary in Lagos, emphasized that the impeachment was strictly the House of Assembly’s decision and not influenced by the party. He highlighted the independence of the legislature in Lagos State, saying, “The House regulates its own affairs, and this decision reflects democratic growth.”

On Tinubu’s involvement, Oladejo said, “We rely on the lawmakers’ explanation that it was a decision to change leadership. Politics involves interests, and those interests evolve over time.”

Claims of Governorship Ambition

Responding to claims that Obasa’s impeachment was linked to his alleged ambition to run for governor, Oladejo said there’s no ongoing governorship race as the next election is in 2027. He added, “Right now, the party’s focus is on delivering good governance, not elections.”
