EKO HOT BLOG reports that Utazi, who represented Enugu North Senatorial District from 2015 to 2023 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), defected to the APC in 2024. However, his recent conduct has reportedly angered party leaders at the grassroots level, prompting disciplinary action.
In a formal letter addressed to the APC State Chairman, Barrister Ugochukwu Agballah, the Uzo-Uwani party executives accused the former senator of undermining the APC by openly associating with PDP events and personalities. The letter was jointly signed by Chief Chris Ajodo (LGA Chairman), Hon. Pius Diara (Secretary), and Hon. Albert Aniebonam (Nkpologu Ward Chairman).
According to the petition, Utazi was reported by his Nkpologu Ward for attending PDP Enugu North Zonal Chapter meetings and endorsing Governor Peter Mbah’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 polls. The ward further submitted video footage allegedly showing the senator’s participation in opposition activities.
The petitioners also accused Utazi of publicly criticizing the APC in interviews, claiming that his comments had embarrassed the party and harmed its reputation in the state.
To address the allegations, the local government set up a three-member disciplinary committee on April 8, 2025. The committee said it officially invited Utazi to appear and defend himself but received no response from him.
“Despite being duly notified and invited, the Respondent failed to appear before the disciplinary body,” the letter stated. “Nonetheless, the committee conducted an independent investigation and found him guilty.”
The report, submitted on April 12, 2025, was reviewed by the local government executive committee, which then unanimously endorsed the recommendation for Utazi’s indefinite suspension.
“The committee found his actions highly disappointing, repugnant and unbecoming of an APC member,” the statement read. “The Local Government Executive hereby endorses his indefinite suspension in line with the party’s constitution.”
