Troops of the 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, have arrested a notorious bandit leader and arms dealer, Bako Wurgi, alias Baka NaGarba, suspected to be involved in the murder of the Emir of Gobir, Alhaji Isa Mohammed Bawa, in Sokoto State.
The operation took place on December 14 in Shinkafi, Zamfara State, after Wurgi sought treatment for injuries from a clash with a rival group.
Intelligence sources confirmed that Wurgi was apprehended at a hospital with multiple cuts and gunshot wounds. Two accomplices escaped during the operation, but another individual who transported Bako in a tricycle was captured.
The late Emir of Gobir was abducted on July 9, 2024, and murdered on August 22 after failed ransom negotiations. Reports reveal that Wurgi played a key role in the abduction and killing, with ransom demands including cash and motorcycles.
Wurgi, an arms smuggler with international links, is reportedly related to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji. His son, Sani Duna, allegedly served as Turji’s getaway biker, underscoring the family’s involvement in banditry.
The arrest marks a major step in efforts to curb terrorism and banditry in the Northwest region. Wurgi is being held at an undisclosed location while a manhunt for his accomplices continues.
Residents of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States have praised the operation, expressing hope for reduced violence and improved security in the region.
