Merino, who has less than a year remaining on his contract with the La Liga side, has been a standout performer for both his club and country. His impressive showing at Euro 2024, where he was an integral part of the Spanish squad that clinched the title, has further solidified his reputation. Notably, Merino scored a crucial late goal against Germany in the quarter-finals, highlighting his ability to deliver in high-pressure situations.
The acquisition of Merino will mark Arsenal’s third major signing of the transfer window. The club has already bolstered its squad with the additions of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, the latter of whom was secured permanently from Brentford following a successful loan spell.

Merino’s versatility in midfield is expected to complement Arsenal’s existing options. His ability to play as a deeper-lying midfielder will provide additional support and flexibility in the Gunners’ midfield, complementing the play of Declan Rice, who often played a ‘box-to-box’ role last season. Merino’s arrival will also introduce more depth and competition in the midfield area, alongside current players such as Jorginho, Thomas Partey, and Martin Ødegaard.
Prior to his time at Real Sociedad, Merino had a stint in the Premier League with Newcastle United, where he made a notable impact. His move to Sociedad in 2018 allowed him to continue developing his game, including a productive spell alongside Ødegaard during the 2019-20 season. With 28 international caps for Spain and a total of 45 appearances in all competitions last season, Merino’s addition to Arsenal is anticipated to strengthen their squad significantly.
