EKO HOT BLOG reports that the altercation reportedly began with celebrations and provocations surrounding the draw. After Salah’s equalizer, Okello, a Manchester United fan, celebrated by throwing popcorn at the Arsenal supporter, escalating the tension between the two.
The conflict turned physical, resulting in Okello being struck with a stick wielded by the Arsenal fan, identified only as Onan. According to the Chairperson of Kaharo Sub County, he received information about the altercation early Monday morning.
“I received information that two men fought on Sunday night in Kyobugombe trading centre, and one was rushed to Bukinda Health Centre for treatment before being referred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, where he died,” he stated.
Local media reports reveal that the scuffle originated in a video hall where fans gathered to watch the match. When Liverpool scored in the 81st minute, Okello celebrated, angering the Arsenal fan, which sparked the argument. After the match, the Arsenal supporter struck Okello with a stick, leading to his injuries.
The district police commander (DPC) of Kabale, Joseph Bakaleke, confirmed the incident, stating that police received reports about the altercation and verified that Okello succumbed to his injuries later.
“We received information indicating that two boys, supporters of different teams, had a scuffle, resulting in one assaulting the other. It is alleged that the assaulted fan died after being taken to the hospital,” Bakaleke explained.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation. The family of Okello is seeking justice, and Bakaleke has called for calm among the family members while efforts to locate the suspect continue.
“We have encouraged the relatives of the deceased to remain calm as we hunt for the other individual involved in the fight to clarify what transpired and gather information from witnesses to aid in the investigation,” he added.
