EKO HOT BLOG reports that former Arsenal player Martin Keown has claimed that Arsenal played a role in Tottenham’s decision to sack manager Antonio Conte on Sunday. The Italian coach was dismissed following his explosive interview after Tottenham’s poor performance against Southampton before the international break.
Conte joined the North London side in November 2021, but his tenure was short-lived. Prior to his dismissal, Spurs suffered several setbacks, including being knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield United and exiting the Champions League to AC Milan in the round of sixteen. In the Premier League, they blew a two-goal lead against bottom-club Southampton.
According to Keown, the success of Arsenal this season may have contributed to Tottenham’s decision to sack Conte. The Gunners are currently leading the league and are 20 points ahead of fourth-placed Tottenham with 10 games left to play.
“I think they should have kept him until the end of the season, no doubt,” Keown said on talkSPORT. “I think Arsenal have played a part. The fact that Arsenal are 20 points clear of Spurs and this time last year they were both in the run-in for the top-four places puts Spurs under enormous pressure.”
Conte’s sacking has come as a surprise to many, considering he had just signed a contract until 2024. The former Inter Milan, Juventus, Italy, and Chelsea boss had promised to bring success to Tottenham, but his tenure ended after just four months in charge.
Tottenham is yet to announce who will take over as the new manager, but rumors have linked former RB Leipzig coach Julian Nagelsmann and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag to the role. Spurs are currently in ninth place in the Premier League, five points behind the top-four spots.
