Arsenal Sporting Director, Edu To Leave Club After Restructuring

Published

on

Arsenal sporting director Edu is set to depart from his role at the club. The Brazilian originally returned to Arsenal as technical director in the summer of 2019 and was later promoted to sporting director in November 2022.

A former midfielder for Arsenal from 2001 to 2005, Edu won two league titles with the Gunners, including the historic ‘Invincibles’ season in 2003-04. During his tenure as an executive, he played a key role in recruiting manager Mikel Arteta, who led Arsenal to an FA Cup victory in his first season.

While Arsenal hasn’t claimed major silverware since, Edu is widely praised for helping transform the club into Premier League title contenders alongside Arteta. Arsenal finished as Premier League runners-up to Manchester City in the past two seasons.

Edu’s tenure saw the recruitment of current key players such as captain Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus, and Declan Rice. However, other signings, like David Luiz and Willian, had a more limited impact. Notably, all but one player from Arsenal’s starting XI last Saturday joined the club after Edu’s appointment, with Bukayo Saka the only exception as a homegrown talent.

Arsenal has also seen recent changes in off-field leadership. Richard Garlick took over as managing director this season following CEO Vinai Venkatesham’s departure last campaign, and the club is set to appoint James King as director of football operations. King previously worked with Arsenal before joining the Professional Footballers’ Association as general counsel.
