EKO HOT BLOG reports that Arsenal have suffered a major blow as defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a “significant” knee injury.
The 24-year-old limped off the field during Arsenal’s Europa League round of 16 second leg against Sporting Lisbon last Thursday and was later seen wearing a brace and using crutches. He subsequently missed Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.
Arsenal confirmed the news in a statement, saying:
“Following his substitution during last Thursday’s Europa League match, subsequent assessments have confirmed that Takehiro Tomiyasu sustained a significant injury to his right knee. Tomi has had successful surgery in London on Tuesday and will be ruled out for the remainder of this season. Everyone at the club will now be working hard with Tomi, so he can join pre-season training ahead of next season.”
The injury leaves Arsenal with just two fit senior right-sided centre-backs in Rob Holding and Ben White, with the latter currently having to operate at right-back. William Saliba is also currently sidelined with a back injury, leaving Arsenal’s back line stretched to its limit.
The news will come as a major blow to Arsenal fans, who have been impressed with Tomiyasu’s performances since his arrival from Bologna in the summer transfer window. The Japanese international has made 20 appearances for the Gunners this season, showing his versatility by playing at right-back and centre-back.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will now have to rely on Holding and White to steer the team through the final 10 games of the Premier League season. The Gunners currently sit ninth in the table, nine points adrift of the top four, and face a difficult run-in that includes games against Everton, Chelsea and Manchester City.
The injury to Tomiyasu is the latest setback for Arteta, who has already had to deal with a number of injury problems this season, particularly in defence.
The Spanish coach will be hoping that his remaining players can step up and help Arsenal salvage something from what has been a disappointing campaign.
