  • Aston Villa’s late surge puts them in fourth place, three points clear of Tottenham.
  • With just six games left, Manchester City are poised to secure their fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Arsenal’s aspirations for the Premier League title took a significant hit when Aston Villa scored twice late in the game, securing a dramatic 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday and boosting their own chances for a top-four finish.

Mikel Arteta’s team had the chance to reclaim the top spot in the table with a win, but their hopes were dashed as they allowed two goals in the final six minutes, relinquishing the lead to Manchester City.

Leon Bailey opened the scoring for the visitors, and Ollie Watkins sealed the victory, handing Villa’s manager Unai Emery his second satisfying triumph of the season against the club that dismissed him in 2019.

Arsenal’s defeat, their first in 12 league matches, sees them now in second place, trailing City by two points, with Liverpool in third place, level on points with Arsenal but behind on goal difference.

Arsenal’s lackluster performance casts doubt on their quest for their first English title in two decades. The past week has been particularly disheartening for the Gunners, as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals, setting up a challenging trip to Germany for the second leg.

With memories of last season’s collapse after squandering an eight-point lead in the title race, Arsenal now face the risk of repeating history.

Aston Villa’s ascent to fourth place, courtesy of Tottenham’s defeat at Newcastle, pushed them ahead of Emery’s side on goal difference.

Villa’s second victory in six league matches now puts them three points clear of Tottenham, who have a game in hand in the race for a top-four finish and Champions League qualification.

Emery celebrated with a jubilant jig on the touchline, while Arteta stood ashen-faced as Arsenal faced up to a catastrophic loss.

With just six games left, champions City are closing in on an unprecedented fourth successive Premier League crown.

Further Reading

City’s rout of Luton on Saturday had knocked Arsenal out of first place.

But the Gunners should have been on a high after Liverpool suffered a shock 1-0 defeat against Crystal Palace just half an hour before kick-off in North London.
