Eddie Nketiah gave Arsenal the lead at the Emirates with his first goal in nine matches. However, the Seagulls were quickly levelled through a Danny Welbeck penalty.
Karl Hein was handed his Arsenal debut in goal but had a moment to forget. He slipped and then brought down Welbeck before the striker stepped up to score against his former club.
Goals from substitute Kaoru Mitoma and wing-back Tariq Lamptey put Brighton two ahead in the second half and Arsenal had no answer.
Arteta made 10 changes from the 1-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday, with William Saliba the only player to keep his place.
And when asked if he thinks his squad needs strengthening in January, the Spaniard insisted opportunities will need to be looked at. Arteta told reporters: “That’s a window that is open and we’ll have to discuss the opportunities that we have and be on the market for opportunities.”
“In moments where we clearly on top of the game we didn’t take our opportunities.”
Summer signing Fabio Vieira was given another chance to push his cause for a regular first-team spot.
However, the Portugal midfielder flattered to deceive.
Arteta says Vieira is suffering with a lack of fortune and is not concerned over his performances.
Arteta said: “I think in front of goal he’s been unlucky but every player needs time to adapt. I’m not worried at all.”
