The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), and other university-based unions are set to meet with the reconstituted committee to renegotiate the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government, according to ASUU National President Emmanuel Osodeke.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that although a specific date for the meeting was not provided, Osodeke confirmed that discussions are scheduled for the upcoming week to address ongoing issues.

In early October, the Federal Government reformed the committee tasked with renegotiating the 2009 agreement with university unions, setting a three-month timeline for their recommendations.

This marks the fourth renegotiation committee since 2017, with past committees led by Wale Babalakin in 2017, Munzali Jubril in 2020, and Nimi Briggs in 2022.

ASUU had previously embarked on a nine-month strike in 2020, resulting in the formation of a government committee led by Jubril, whose 2021 draft agreement later led to further recommendations by the Nimi Briggs committee in June 2022.

Amid ASUU’s recent ultimatum, the Ministry of Education, under former Minister Tahir Mamman, inaugurated the latest committee.

Mamman highlighted that this committee includes officials from various relevant ministries and agencies, aiming for a transparent and collaborative process.

Additionally, SSANU announced plans to address issues like withheld salaries, wage awards, and an outstanding N50 billion in earned allowances at its 3rd Quadrennial National Delegates Conference next Wednesday.

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim stated that the conference, themed “Respecting Collective Bargaining Agreement and Industrial Peace in a Democracy,” will allow the association to reaffirm its commitment to the advancement of the Nigerian university system.

He noted that the conference will also initiate SSANU’s electoral process to elect new leadership for the next four years.
