Eko Hot Blog reports former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has taken a swipe at President Bola Tinubu, criticizing the administration’s handling of the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria.
Atiku, who contested against Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election, urged the President to step aside if unable to address the escalating security challenges plaguing the nation.
In a scathing remark, Atiku questioned Tinubu’s commitment to national security, particularly in the face of the recent wave of kidnappings across the country.
The former vice president expressed his concern that despite the rising cases of insecurity, the President opted for a private visit to France, leaving a void in leadership.
Atiku stated, “Tinubu is playing fiddle while Nigeria is drowning in the ocean of insecurity. To imagine that the Commander-in-Chief is on a so-called private visit while kidnappers kill a nursing mother and grandmother in Abuja for failing to pay N90m ransom and two monarchs in Ekiti, among other regular tragedies besetting Nigerians.”
The former vice president criticized Tinubu’s absence during a critical time and emphasized the need for a proactive leader to address the pervasive insecurity and the deteriorating economy.
Atiku expressed discontent with what he referred to as the President’s role as a “Tourist-in-Chief” and called for continuous, 24/7 leadership to tackle the nation’s challenges.
“If the shoes are too big for Emilokan, he should step aside. Nigeria does not need another Tourist-in-Chief. The country needs 24/7 leadership to confront the pervasive insecurity and collapsing economy,” Atiku asserted on his X account on Tuesday.
President Tinubu’s recent private visit to France, his third since assuming office eight months ago, has drawn criticism from various quarters. The trip has become a subject of public scrutiny, with opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) demanding explanations from the Presidency.
The PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, remarked that the current state of insecurity and the nation’s economic challenges made it an inappropriate time for Tinubu to embark on a foreign trip.
Similarly, the LP’s spokesperson for the 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, Yunusa Tanko, alleged a hidden agenda for the trip and even mentioned concerns about the President’s health.
As Nigeria grapples with persistent kidnappings and insecurity in various regions, the public outcry against the government’s response continues to grow. Civil society groups, including the Civil Society Joint Action Group, revealed that 17,469 Nigerians have been abducted under the administrations of Muhammadu Buhari and Bola Tinubu from 2019 to date.
The alarming statistics and Atiku’s outspoken criticism underscore the urgent need for a comprehensive and effective strategy to address the security challenges facing the nation. As the nation awaits President Tinubu’s return and an official response from the Presidency, the call for accountability and proactive governance remains at the forefront of public discourse.
