Autonomy: Nasarawa Submits Bill to Abolish Joint Accounts, Ministry Of LG
The Nasarawa State Government has initiated efforts to restructure the local government system to align with the Supreme Court’s ruling that grants financial autonomy to local governments.
To facilitate this, the state government has submitted an executive bill to the House of Assembly, seeking an amendment to the local government law.
During Monday’s session in Lafia, Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Danladi Jatau, announced the bill after House Leader Suleiman Azara presented it for the first reading, with Minority Leader Luka Zhekaba seconding the motion.

Jatau explained that the bill aims to amend the existing local government law to comply with the Supreme Court’s judgment on financial autonomy for the third tier of government.
The second reading of the bill is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
It is important to recall that on July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment affirming financial autonomy for Nigeria’s 774 local government councils. This ruling is expected to reshape governance at the grassroots level nationwide.
Following the court’s decision, several state governors have begun revising and restructuring local government laws. Nasarawa State’s submission of this executive bill is part of this broader movement.

Speaking to the press after the session, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Jonah Ali Dizaho, noted that the proposed amendment is designed to modernize local government laws, reflecting the current demand for financial autonomy for local governments in the state.
“The amendment will, among other things, abolish joint accounts and the State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs,” Dizaho added.
