Eko Hot Blog reports that the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the party’s National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to give a firm assurance that he will resign his position after the 2023 elections.
The call was contained in the resolutions of the PDP BoT issued by the board’s chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, at the end of its meeting on Friday.
A crisis over the position of the national chairman has rocked the party in the past few months.
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has spearheaded an effort to force Ayu’s resignation.
The governor has argued that the party chairman had promised to resign if a northerner emerged the presidential candidate.
But Ayu has refused to resign despite the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a northerner, as the PDP nominee for president.
On Friday, Wike reiterated his bribery allegation against the party’s national chairman, saying he collected N1 billion from a politician.
However, Ayu denied collecting the sum from anybody, saying he could not sit by and watch his integrity get maligned.
Responding to the back-and-forth between party members, the BoT called on party leaders and their close associates to desist from making further inflammatory statements.
It also called on the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum to convene a meeting of the forum immediately.
The PDP BoT extended its call to Atiku, asking the presidential candidate to review the membership of the Presidential Campaign Council and make it inclusive.
“The BoT called on all Party Leaders and persons close to them to desist forthwith from making further inflammatory remarks or press interviews,” part of the resolutions reads.
“Called on the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum to convene a meeting of the forum without further delay.
“Called on all leaders of the Party to match words with action and where commitments are made to unconditionally fulfill same.
“Urged the National Chairman as an eminent leader, to give a firm assurance that he will resign his position after the 2023 election. In the same vein, the BoT Chairman has been authorized to offer apologies on behalf of all members who feel maligned or aggrieved by the public statements made by its members nationwide that has sharpened the current division in the Party.
“The BoT also called on the Presidential Candidate to review its membership of the Presidential Campaign Council, and other advisory appointments to make it all inclusive.”
The PDP BoT added that it will refer “some of these recommendations for noting and appropriate action to NEC of the Party in due course.”
Recall that Wike had said it would be foolish to expect Ayu to resign after the presidential election has been concluded.
