Ballon d’Or 2019: Lionel Messi Beats Van Dijk, Ronaldo To Win World Best Player For Record Sixth-Time

Barcelona talisman, Lionel Messi emerges world best player on the planet after winning his sixth Ballon d’Or title on Monday Night in France.

Argentina international beat rival Cristiano Ronaldo, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane to be crowned world best player.

The duo of Messi and Ronaldo dominated the world football scene as both shared five Ballon d’Or each, but Messi’s recent performance has been rewarded with his sixth award.

Champions League winner Van Dijk came behind Lionel Messi, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo as the third-best player in the world.

Senegalese international, Sadio Mane who has been in great form for Liverpool came fourth behind Ronaldo.

Liverpool keeper Alisson won the inaugural Yashin Trophy for best goalkeeper, ahead of Barcelona’s Germany international Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Brazilian compatriot Ederson of Manchester City.

Defender Matthijs de Ligt took the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best under-21 player and selected by former Ballon d’Or winners.

The 20-year-old, who joined Juventus this summer after helping Ajax reach the semi-finals of last season’s Champions League, beat Borussia Dortmund and England forward Jadon Sancho to the award.
