Barcelona: UEFA Opens Investigation Into The Negreira Case
  • The Union of European Football Association (UEFA) has entered the discuss concerning Spanish football club, Barcelona regarding what has now been dubbed the ‘Negreira case’.

  • In a statement issued by the football body, it states that in accordance with its ethics and disciplinary, investigations will be carried out to determine whether violations were made regarding UEFA’s legal framework.

  • The Negreira case as it is now been called, is in response to allegations that FC Barcelona bribed the Referee body of the La Liga, headed by Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that UEFA, the governing body of European football, has opened an investigation into a possible violation of its legal framework by Barcelona Football Club. The investigation, dubbed the ‘Negreira case’, was announced in a statement released by UEFA on 23rd March 2023.

The statement reads, “In accordance with Article 31.4. UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors will carry out an investigation into a possible violation of UEFA’s legal framework.”

The investigation is said to be related to Barcelona’s dealings, with referees as it was revealed the Catalan club had paid significant amount of money into the La Liga refereeing body, headed by Jose Maria Negreira.

The major football club from Catalonia is being accused of corruption due to supposed payments amounting to €7.3 million (£6.4 million) that were made to a senior Spanish referee named Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira during the period spanning from 2001 to 2018.

UEFA’s statement did not provide any further details regarding the investigation, but it is expected that the governing body will thoroughly investigate the matter to determine if any violations have occurred.

This is not the first time that Barcelona has faced scrutiny over its dealings. In 2019, the club was fined €300,000 by FIFA for breaching rules on the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18. The club was also banned from signing players for two transfer windows, though the ban was later reduced on appeal.
