EKO HOT BLOG reports that UEFA, the governing body of European football, has opened an investigation into a possible violation of its legal framework by Barcelona Football Club. The investigation, dubbed the ‘Negreira case’, was announced in a statement released by UEFA on 23rd March 2023.
The statement reads, “In accordance with Article 31.4. UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors will carry out an investigation into a possible violation of UEFA’s legal framework.”
The investigation is said to be related to Barcelona’s dealings, with referees as it was revealed the Catalan club had paid significant amount of money into the La Liga refereeing body, headed by Jose Maria Negreira.
The major football club from Catalonia is being accused of corruption due to supposed payments amounting to €7.3 million (£6.4 million) that were made to a senior Spanish referee named Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira during the period spanning from 2001 to 2018.
UEFA’s statement did not provide any further details regarding the investigation, but it is expected that the governing body will thoroughly investigate the matter to determine if any violations have occurred.
This is not the first time that Barcelona has faced scrutiny over its dealings. In 2019, the club was fined €300,000 by FIFA for breaching rules on the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18. The club was also banned from signing players for two transfer windows, though the ban was later reduced on appeal.
