Bayelsa Boosts Rice Production with South Korean Mills

South Korean Team Installs Modern Rice Mills in Bayelsa

  • A South Korean technical team has installed advanced rice processing mills in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
  • The mills have a capacity to process 40 metric tonnes of rice paddies daily.
  • This initiative strengthens the bilateral relationship between Bayelsa and South Korea.

A delegation from South Korea recently completed the installation of state-of-the-art rice processing mills at the School-to-Land Farm in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. These modern mills can process 40 metric tonnes of rice paddies per day, significantly boosting rice production capacity in the region.

The Managing Director of Delta Sung Machinery and Construction Company Limited, Mr. Byung Chul Son, led the team. He explained that they collaborated with the Bayelsa Ministry of Agriculture to train staff in soil preparation, irrigation, rice cultivation, and milling techniques. Son noted that to fully optimize the mills, additional equipment such as dryers, pre-boilers, and color selectors would be necessary.

Bayelsa’s Commissioner for Agriculture, Prof. Beke Sese, highlighted the transformative impact of the project. He revealed that the state previously had only a three-tonne-per-day rice mill. With the new additions—four mills with a combined capacity of 40 tonnes daily—the state is now better positioned to achieve its goal of producing one million tonnes of rice annually.

A South Korean delegation also visited Governor Douye Diri in Sampou, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Council. During the visit, Governor Diri expressed appreciation for the Korean government’s donation of rice mills and farming tractors, as well as their ongoing technical support.

Diri shared his administration’s vision to make Bayelsa a hub for rice production. He credited the partnership to the efforts of the previous Korean Ambassador, who included Bayelsa in the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) program for sustainable development. The governor called for additional support, urging Korean engineers to help train local engineers to manufacture tractors and other farming tools.

With this collaboration, Bayelsa is set to strengthen its agricultural output and reduce reliance on imported rice.
