Bayelsa Government Investigates ‘Marriage’ Between 4-Year-Old And 54-Year-Old Man
EKO HOT BLOG reports that in a case causing widespread concern, the Bayelsa government is investigating a traditional rite in Akeddei community where a 4-year-old girl was “married” to a 54-year-old man.
While the girl’s parents and community leaders claim it was a life-saving “Koripamo” ritual, critics view it as child marriage and potential abuse.

The girl’s father, Mr. Aboma, explained that his daughter was frequently ill and, according to Akeddei tradition, needed a man to pay a symbolic amount to save her life. This payment, they argue, is not a real marriage and won’t prevent the girl from marrying someone else later.
However, the elaborate ceremony held on December 26th drew outrage, leading to summons for the involved parties by the Bayelsa government’s Gender Response Initiative Team (GRIT).
During the meeting, the “groom” Mr. Napoleon, defended his actions, emphasizing his intention to save the girl’s life and noting that such practices have happened before, albeit not so publicly.
The Paramount ruler of Akeddei, Chief Binabo, confirmed the ritual but expressed surprise at the extravagant ceremony. He reiterated that this is not a formal marriage and should not be misconstrued as such.
GRIT representatives acknowledged the community’s explanation but emphasized the need for further investigation.
Dr. James Omietimi confirmed the girl’s well-being and lack of sexual abuse, but the long-term implications of the ritual remain a concern.
