Farouk Kuta, the INEC returning officer, explained during a briefing at the state headquarters in Yenagoa on Saturday night that the collation delay was prompted by uncertainty regarding the readiness of results from other local government areas before midnight.
Consequently, he rescheduled the collation to begin on Sunday at 10 a.m.
In the off-cycle Bayelsa State governorship election held on Saturday, a total of 16 candidates, including two women, participated. Simultaneously, governorship elections took place in Kogi and Imo states.
However, analysts suggest that the Bayelsa State governorship poll is primarily a contest between the incumbent, Governor Douye Diri, seeking a second term under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the former governor, Timipre Sylva, running as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
