Eko Hot Blog reports that Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso, has commended Nathan Tella, praising the Nigerian international for his crucial role in their Bundesliga title charge.
The former Spanish midfielder specifically lauded the 24-year-old for his outstanding performance during their 1-0 victory against Union Berlin on Saturday, a win that puts them within reach of the title, needing just one more victory.
“Nathan played very well. He was important for us as he drew the second yellow card for Gosens. We have healthy competition in that position between Jerry and Nathan. That helps us enormously,” Alonso the club’s official website.
“The situation is very good, and perhaps we’ll be able to celebrate something on Sunday. But first there’s the Europa League, and our focus is fully on that,” he added.
Tella started the match and played until the 79th minute, when Jeremie Frimpong substituted him. This change occurred 12 minutes after his fellow Super Eagles teammate, Victor Boniface, replaced Borja Iglesias Quintás.
Florian Wirtz’s penalty goal in the first half secured Leverkusen a well-deserved victory in the game-week 28 fixture at Stadion An der Alten Försterei, Berlin.
In his debut season with Leverkusen after transferring from Southampton in August, Tella has made a notable impact in the club’s jersey. Despite starting only four out of 19 appearances in their 28 fixtures, he has contributed five league goals and two assists.
Leverkusen currently trails Bayern Munich by 16 points in the standings and could potentially clinch the title with a victory over visiting Werder Bremen on April 14 at BayArena. Champagne is already being prepared in anticipation of the title celebration at the stadium.
