The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Works, Engineer Olujimi Hotonu has challenged engineers and other related professionals within the employ of the State Government to be more meticulous in monitoring construction works across the State averring that the spate of building collapsed in the State could be reduced reasonably if proper monitoring is institutionalized and strictly followed.
Addressing a set of participants at a 3-day workshop organized by the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory, LSMTL for engineers and other professionals in the built sectors of the Agency recently the Permanent Secretary attributed the use of substandard construction materials in construction works as a great threat to the fight against building collapse.
He commended officials of the LSMTL for putting a check on the activities of construction materials manufacturers and putting in place a quality control mechanism on buildings and other infrastructure thereby reducing the rate of loss of lives and property to buildings collapse.

The Permanent Secretary who was represented by the Director of Project Planning and Design in the Ministry, Engr. Rotimi Idowu Thomas, explained that one of the roles of the Agency, LSMTL, as a regulator is to monitor the activities and performances of Registered Independent Materials Testing Laboratories in the State in order to ensure efficient and effective service delivery in the building industry.
According to him, the training program was organized to reveal how participants can contribute to the realisation of the objectives of LSMTL as a regulatory body in the built industry.
He stated that the training will be centred on the Materials Quality Control and Assurance Mechanism in combating the failure in buildings and civil engineering construction Industries.
The session, he said will seek to explain the roles of the LSMTL as a regulatory body and Materials Testing Laboratory of last resort.
