EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, has urged teenagers to be themselves in order to attain their full potential in life.
The Commissioner made the call during the closing ceremony of the five-day Teenage Summer Career Program tagged, “Being Young Is An Asset,” organised by FOCAD Global Concepts in partnership with the Alara of Ilara Kingdom, HRM Oba Dr Olukayode Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, at the Lagos Theatre, Epe.
The Honourable Commissioner who arrived in the middle of a lecture session was accompanied by the Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of Education District III, Dr Mrs Funke Oyetola,
The Commissioner who began her address by responding to a question from one of the teenagers on how to detect their mission in life disclosed that the success pattern and path of a teenager varies.
She also explained that an individual must possess the quality of originality by being unique, peculiar and bespoke.
”Like myself, there is only one Folashade Adefisayo with my genes, with my background, with my training and all.
“There may be somebody else so-called, but I am unique, peculiar and bespoke. You had better believe it because if you believe it, God will help you detect your mission in life,” she said.
Mrs Adefisayo, while passionately addressing the teenagers went on to make herself a reference point, flashing back on how brilliant she was at passing her examinations which wasn’t a problem during her university days at age 15, but later got distracted.
‘When I entered the university, I was so confident in myself. I started playing but by the time I graduated, I did not do as well as I should have because I played.
“I was so sure that I would pass but that was where God showed me that I must be hardworking, I can’t take anything for granted. So it was after I left the university that I started to see a purpose for myself in life, that was my own path,” she said.
Mrs Folashade said that God showed her to be focused, work hard, have a vision for herself and have a direction.
She also disclosed that her resolve to discover her purpose and impact lives led her to speak with young people by way of motivating and inspiring them.
These, she did at no cost in churches, and mosques for several years as a banker before switching careers to become an educator.
The Honourable Commissioner for Education also told the teenagers that it was important to strive to add value to themselves by taking up a vocation while also noting that they must be motivated, assertive and focused to harness and nurture the God-given talents deposited in them with a bid to becoming the best in their chosen career and vocation.
To drive home her points, she made use of her daughter, whom she said sponsored herself all through her years of stay at the university with proceeds from her hairdressing skills which she began for free.
She also cited the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, who she said also rose from grass to grace starting from Odo-Abore Primary School in Mushin.
”Don’t look down on any skill. Develop yourself. You are a great person, you are brought into the world for a purpose. Go forward and be the best thing you are supposed to be.
“The Deputy Governor is from here, I followed him to his Primary School at Odo-Abore in Mushin but today, he has a PhD from America, he is an Engineer, and he is the Deputy Governor of the State. Can you imagine? If he can do it, can you do it? But remember to stay focused and do what is right.
“In whatever you do, your focus should be to be the best that you can be. If you are going to be a hairdresser, a doctor or a lawyer, be the best in Nigeria,” she said.
