Behind The Decision: APC Clarifies Uzodimma’s Replacement In Edo Primary

Eko Hot Blog reports that the All Progressives Congress (APC) clarified on Thursday why Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State was replaced by Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State as chairman of the Edo governorship primary.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, APC spokesman Felix Morka said Uzodimma was “unavoidably unavailable” to finish the primary, necessitating his replacement by his deputy Otu.

The changes were announced Wednesday, hours after four Edo aspirants passed a vote of no confidence in Uzodimma. The governor had declared Dennis Idahosa the winner, while the returning officer named Monday Okpebholo.

Morka appealed for understanding, saying “Governor Uzodinma was neither ‘sacked’ nor ‘dropped’ as erroneously reported, but was unavoidably unavailable to lead the completion of the primary due to his attendance at the National Economic Council meeting.”

He added: “His Excellency Bassey Otu, Governor of Cross Rivers State, who was the Deputy Chairman, graciously accepted to serve as Chairman, and to complete the Edo Primary Election Process.”

The clarification comes after the party declared the primary inconclusive on Tuesday amidst confusion over the valid winner. Reports that Uzodimma was dismissed led the APC spokesman to explain he simply could not see the process through and was replaced by his deputy.
