The Federal Ministry of Education has annulled the recent appointment of Bernard Odoh as Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.
The University’s Governing Council, led by Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman Ambassador Greg Mbadiwe, had previously announced Odoh’s appointment as the institution’s 7th substantive Vice-Chancellor on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, following a selection process involving interviews with shortlisted candidates.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that however, the Ministry of Education, in a letter dated November 1 and signed by Mrs. R.G. Ilyasu on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, instructed the Council to rescind the appointment.
The Ministry explained that the directive was in line with an agreement reached on October 25 with the Honourable Minister of State for Education, which stipulated that no appointments should be finalized without first addressing outstanding grievances within the university community.
The letter read, “Sequel to your meeting with the Honourable Minister of State for Education (HMSE) on Friday, October 25, 2024, it was formally agreed that no appointments should be carried out by your Council without reconciling with the aggrieved parties in the university community.
It has come to the attention of the Ministry that your Council went ahead to appoint a Vice-Chancellor for the university without the presence of the Ministry’s Representative, internal council members, and other stakeholders on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. This constitutes a gross disregard for constituted authority and is not in line with extant provisions.”

The Ministry further directed the university to suspend all other appointments until the newly appointed Honourable Minister of Education assumes office. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission for appropriate follow-up.
