EKO HOT BLOG reports that Manchester United fans say Wout Weghorst deserved his first goal for the Reds against Nottingham Forest and predicted that the striker will score more goals going forward.
The Dutchman arrived on loan for the rest of the season 12 days ago and has started the three matches he has been available for amid Anthony Martial’s latest injury troubles.
The 30-year-old knocked in his first United goal against Forest in Wednesday’s League Cup semi-final first-leg tie on the stroke of half-time to hand the visitors breathing space heading into the break.
Weghorst pounced on a parried shot pushed out by Wayne Henessey to prod the ball into the roof of the net after Marcus Rashford’s sixth-minute opener.
The Netherlands international is seen as a stop-gap until Erik ten Hag can bring in a marquee goal-getter in the summer.
However, the striker is trying to impress his new boss enough to convince him that he can be kept on longer. Weghorst joined United from Burnley after his season-long loan at Besiktas was cut short for the price of £2.6m.
Taking to Twitter, United fans hailed Weghorst for his goal and forecasted that the attacker will continue to bag more if he keeps up the standard he has produced against Crystal Palace, Arsenal and now Forest.
@AbuCorcaigh: Delighted for Weghorst he’s been holding up the ball very well and bringing players into play but just hasn’t been getting chances, got a chance tonight and took it very well.
@SharifflarryArt: Hard work paid off. Happy for him. I hope the fans will support every player.
@Utd_Nate: Deserved goal. He’s been playing decent today
@AliceTalksFooty: Weghorst has more goals than Gakpo and Joao Felix combined so far..
