Beyond Classroom Walls: LASUED Political Science Students Immerse In Odo-Noforija’s Rich Culture

Eko Hot Blog reports in a captivating blend of academia and culture, students pursuing Political Science Education at the College of Management and Social Sciences (COMSSED) in Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), Noforija, Epe Campus, were treated to a memorable field trip to the regal enclave of Odo-Noforija Kingdom. Hosted by the esteemed Aladeshonyin of Odo-Noforija, His Royal Majesty Oba Dr. Babatunde Ogunlaja JP, FMBE, the visit on Wednesday, 24th January 2024, unfolded as part of the students’ educational journey under the course POS 211.

Oba Aladeshonyin, in the company of Oba Adeshina Adebowale (Omola of Odomola) and Oba Musiliu Oliwo (Aladepekun of Odo-Egiri), welcomed the students warmly. He commended their pursuit of knowledge and took the opportunity to address the national discourse on young people advocating for political leadership.

He further acknowledged the role of LASUED in providing academic opportunities for the youth, expressing gratitude for Governor Babajide Sanwoolu’s commitment to education.

An eye witness, Mrs. Funmi Adeyemi, shared her impression of the royal address, saying, “The monarch’s words were not just about the past; he provided wisdom for the future. It was inspiring to witness the convergence of education and culture.”

During the visit, Oba Aladeshonyin shared a rich history of the community, delving into traditions, culture, and heritage. Explaining the community’s name, Noforija, he revealed its meaning as “where the road path leads,” reflecting the lineage’s journey. Eye witnesses noted the palpable connection the students felt with the community’s history.

The monarch provided insight into the ascension process, tracing the lineage through the Aladeshonyin dynasty and dispelling pronunciation myths around the community’s name. His explanations of the community’s uniqueness, including being one of the palaces with an ancestral shrine in Lagos State, captivated the students and heightened their cultural awareness.

The students engaged in a lively question-and-answer session with the monarch, deepening their understanding of the community’s relationship with governance structures. Oba Aladeshonyin generously shared insights, even offering cash gifts during the session, fostering a positive interaction.

Comrade Akinwunmi Joshuah, representing the students, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks. An eyewitness, Mr. Adeyemi Adekunle, remarked, “The students were genuinely appreciative. It was evident in their expressions and the respectful atmosphere during the visit.”

As the visit concluded, expressions of gratitude echoed through the palace. LASUED faculty members, including Alhaja Adijat Hassan and Mr. Ajayi, presented gifts and a LASUED logo frame to the monarch. Dr. Asa, the Acting Head of the Department of Political Science, praised the peaceful and accommodating nature of the host community.
