Eko Hot Blog reports that the Rotary Club of Gbagada has partnered with The George Charitable Foundation to fully renovate and expand the children’s ward at Gbagada General Hospital in Lagos.
The renovated pediatric center was commissioned at an event on Wednesday attended by top Lagos State officials.
Rotary Club Gbagada originally constructed the children’s ward 35 years ago in 1989. Since then, each incoming president of the club has contributed renovations and upgrades annually. This year, the major overhaul and expansion cost approximately 30 million naira, funded jointly by the Rotary Club and The George Foundation.
Speaking at the commissioning, Rotary Club of Gbagada President Oluwabunmi Oguntade said her motivation for the project was her “passion for children.” She approached The George Foundation after raising reaching out to many other NGO, and they generously agreed to match and complete the funding.
“I chose to do something for the children. We came here and we saw that the building we had 35 years ago was actually running down. So the powder and the lipstick is what we have come to commission today,” Oguntade stated.
The extensive renovations included upgrading the ceiling, floors, windows, lighting, paint, beds, and overall ambience to create a modern, child-friendly environment. The George Foundation Chairman, Dr. George Taylor, personally supervised the construction over a 3-month period to ensure quality and timely delivery.
In his speech, Dr. Tein revealed that the George Charitable Foundation has spent over 200 million naira on community projects in education and healthcare since 2018.
He commended the management of Gbagada Hospital for their cooperation during construction and called on other organizations to also “uplift the lives of citizens.”
The opening ceremony was attended by top Lagos State Government officials, including Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Abimbola Saliu, representing the Deputy Governor.
She praised the two organizations for their “genuine commitment to maternal and child healthcare” and appealed for continued partnerships with private groups to meet development needs.
Also present was Lagos Health Service Commission Chairman, Dr. Atinuke Onayiga, who helped initiate The George Foundation’s involvement. She thanked the foundation for always promptly delivering on promises to give back to the state.
In her remarks, District Governor of Rotary International District 9110, Ifeayinwa Rita Ejezie, highlighted this as one of many impactful projects by the Rotary Club of Gbagada during its 40 years of committed service.
“I want to appreciate Rotary Club of Gbagada. In 40 years you have done so much in service to humanity and you are one of the notable clubs we have within the district,” said Ejezie.
The pediatric center will provide improved care for the community’s children and exemplify the service-focused values of Rotary Club Gbagada and The George Charitable Foundation.
