Biafra: Nnamdi Kanu’s Release Imminent – Deputy Speaker, Kalu

There is renewed hope for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPoB), as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, revealed that significant progress has been made through high-level negotiations with key authorities to secure his freedom.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Kalu shared this optimistic update during a meeting of the South-East Legislators Forum in Abuja last week.

“I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to come out. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers,” Kalu said, urging continued support. The meeting, which included lawmakers from various South-East State Houses of Assembly, was led by Kingsley Ikoro and aimed at addressing critical issues facing the region.

The Deputy Speaker emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration for the South-East’s progress. He lamented that internal divisions had caused the region to lose valuable opportunities and called for an end to harmful activities like sit-at-home protests, which he claimed were damaging the region’s development.

“The power of networking is more than money. Unity is power. We lose a lot because we fail to recognize our own. We need to end the sit-at-home protests; they are destroying us. It’s time to come together,” Kalu said.

Kalu also urged support for the proposed South-East Development Commission (SEDC), a body aimed at addressing the region’s reconstruction and rehabilitation needs. He dismissed rumors that President Tinubu opposed the initiative and called on lawmakers to support the project fully.

Looking ahead, the Deputy Speaker announced plans for zonal public hearings on constitutional amendments in the first and second quarters of the following year. He encouraged South-East legislators to actively engage in the process, contribute ideas, and develop a unified legislative approach.

“I commend you all for coming from your various Houses of Assembly to gain exposure here. This will enhance your legislative activities and help you speak from a place of knowledge,” he remarked.

Regarding Kanu’s situation, Kalu called on lawmakers to remain united in addressing the region’s challenges, leveraging federal policies to benefit their communities.

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, after his arrest in Kenya and subsequent extradition to Nigeria. His detention on treason charges has sparked international outcry, with many advocates calling for his release amid growing tensions in the South-East.
