Binani Challenges Election Irregularities In Adamawa: Calls For INEC Review

  • Binani has demanded a review of the election results in 16 local government areas due to violence, rigging, and irregularities in Adamawa.

  • INEC declared the election inconclusive, with plans for a supplementary election in 69 polling units.

  • Binani and the incumbent governor, Fintiri, have both disputed the results and taken their grievances to INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Adamawa State, Senator Aishatu Ahmed, also known as Binani, has demanded a review of the results of the March 18 governorship election in 16 local government areas of the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared the governorship election in the state inconclusive, with a plan for supplementary election in 69 polling units.

EDITOR’S PICKS

A date for the supplementary elections in 69 polling units across 47 registration areas, where elections were cancelled, has yet to be fixed.

Both Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and Binani have disputed the outcome of the polls, as the duo has taken their battle to INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.

While Fintiri and his camp claimed the Resturning Officer was wrong to have declared the poll as inconclusive, Binani, who appeared, on Channels TV Politics Today, monitored by our correspondent, said the Resident Electoral Commissioner did well by declaring the poll inconclusive.

Binani said, “My reason for calling for a review of the elections by INEC is for the simple reason that whoever saw or monitored the election of Adamawa State knows that the election was marred with violence, rigging, over-voting and all sorts of irregularities. The figures that were given to me, as far as I am concerned, were concocted. Because some of the ballots, if one will really dig out, the BVAS were by-passed. If the BVAS accredited 10 people, you will find out that over 30 people must have voted. So that is part of the irregularities, the only way the REC could have come out clean is to declare the results inconclusive.”

Binani said her lawyers had written INEC to get a review of the election results within seven days based on the constitutional provisions.

She said, “My lawyer wrote to INEC on 22nd of this month, becuase the election was declared on the 20th and INEC has seven days to make a review, if at all the review is sought for by the candidate. So I wrote in a letter, my legal personnel put in a request that we need a review of about 16 local government areas.”
