EKO HOT BLOG reports that Yohanna, who had served as Bishop for nearly 12 years, stated that his decision was rooted in his strong opposition to homos£xuality, a stance that aligns with the Nigerian Constitution, which prohibits such practices.
According to Yohanna, Nigerian UMC conferences had repeatedly passed resolutions rejecting LGBTQ recognition, vowing to leave the church if it was ever legalized.
With the UMC now supporting LGBTQ, Yohanna felt compelled to resign, aligning instead with the Global Methodist Church (GMC), a faction that does not endorse LGBTQ doctrines.
Yohanna expressed his belief that continuing with the UMC would violate Nigerian law and go against the teachings of Christianity as he understood them.
In response to allegations about his involvement in the repatriation of a Zimbabwean UMC Bishop by Nigeria’s Immigration Service, Yohanna denied any role, explaining that he had already left the UMC and had no interest in disrupting anyone’s visit.
He attributed the false accusations to a personal vendetta by an individual he declined to ordain.
