The Emeritus Archbishop of the Catholic Church, Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan yesterday asked the National Universities Commission (NUC) to limit itself to the supervision of public universities, stating that it had no business overseeing private tertiary institutions.
He, therefore, canvassed another agency with the full participation of stakeholders to be set up to supervise private universities in a peer review spirit, stressing that the control of private institutions by the NUC was stifling initiatives and creativity.
Onaiyekan was speaking yesterday in Enugu as part of the weeklong activities for the convocation and 10th anniversary of Godfrey Okoye University, Enugu.
The cleric spoke on the topic, “The Catholic Church in education in Nigeria – Between Public and Private.”
