Blind Muslims Knock On Hearts, Urge Embrace Of ‘Visually Able’ Grooms

• Muslim group appeals for an end to discrimination against persons with disabilities

Eko Hot Blog reports that in a heartfelt appeal, the leadership of the Muslim Association of Visually Impaired of Nigeria (MAVIN) has called on Nigerians to show more love and acceptance towards people living with disabilities.

Speaking at the 9th national conference and Quran competition of the group in Osogbo, Osun State, MAVIN’s Amir, Mr. Abdulwasiu Salaudeen, urged society to put an end to all forms of discrimination against persons with disabilities.

Salaudeen emphasized that the visually impaired community desires to be seen as an integral part of society, rather than being marginalized or treated as outsiders. He encouraged Nigerians to consider allowing their daughters to marry responsible visually impaired individuals, asserting that they would be more appreciative and caring than some able-bodied men who mistreat their wives.

“Rather than giving out their daughters to men that would turn them into punching bags, why not allow them to marry men with a disability who would be more appreciative and take care of them?” Salaudeen implored.

While acknowledging that increased sensitization efforts have led to more Nigerians shedding discriminatory attitudes towards people living with disabilities, Salaudeen called for further support from all stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of empowering and creating opportunities for individuals with various forms of disabilities, enabling them to live and relate with the rest of society without facing discrimination.

“Persons with disabilities are also part of the society. We want the society to see us as part of them,” Salaudeen stated. “There is nothing an able man can do that Persons With Disabilities can’t do.”

The MAVIN leader further highlighted the progress made by the organization since its inception, noting that while many members were initially jobless, their circumstances have improved significantly. However, he stressed the need for continued support and empowerment initiatives to ensure that people with disabilities can fully participate and contribute to society.

The conference, attended by delegates from 27 states across the country, was organized by MAVIN, an organization founded on April 1, 2006, with the mandate of “Giving Vision to the Blind.” The event served as a platform to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the visually impaired community and to advocate for greater inclusion and equal opportunities.
